Hi
I was wondering if you could help. I have a Powermax boiler that was installed when the house was built c2000. I have had problems a few times where the water has run cold after a short time, the valve has been changed and this has previously rectified the problem. I have had the same problem and called out Southern Electric (as I have their maintenance) and the chap that came to see it said that it was not the valve and that the insides are completely scaled. I was a bit confused as the problem is identical to the issue before and this was resolved by the valve being replaced (although this had to be done each year).
He has said that there is no way of descaling the boiler as you can't put chemicals in to it, and therefore I need a new boiler. Does this sound right?
Many thanks

Nic,
No he is wrong. Descaling is a perfectly practical option. I have descaled dozens if not hundreds of Powermax boilers with the problem you descibe!

Hello Mike and Nic. What Nic describes is exactly what is happening to us. We have a Open Vented PowerMax 155. We've had the blending valve replaced 3 to 4 times by British Gas with whom we have coverage. We are in the same situation. The last blending valve that was replaced has made no difference in the temperature and pressure of the hot water The last call out was because the hot water pressure had dropped. Since our is an open vented system we cannot check or there is no pressure gauge to check. The British Gas called someone and they diagnose a blendin valve problem as in the past. Once replaced this last 3rd to 4th time, it made no difference in hot water pressure and to make matters worse we feel the water that was hot before we called them for is now luke warm. The British Gas engineer says scaled up insides and says unlikely it can done descale. Mike can you advise the scope of work and a price range. We live in South Croydon
