Great site! I came looking on here as I have an interesting situation.
The boiler is a Powermax 185HE, it is approx 12 (ish) years old and has been working fine.
The timeclock on the front started re-setting itself, and as we have a repair contract with D & G, decided to get them to replace the timeclock.
They sent out the Baxi Heat Team engineer who met with my wife, took one look at the boiler and immediately condemned it.
He noticed slight traces of soot near the top cover, then when he took off the cover, there was a circle of black soot on the underside.
He said this is a sign of spillage, disconnected the gas supply and capped it off. Then left.
(We have a CO detector alarm in the cupboard next to the boiler and this had not been activated).
When I got home I asked what his CO meter reading was my wife said he did not take a reading, just saw the soot and shut it off.
I then got an independent gas engineer friend to come and have a look. He confessed he knew nothing about these boilers, but had a poke around and noticed a flexi-pipe clip was loose directly under where the soot marks on the lid were, so tightened it up.
He re-connected the gas, fired it up and sat with his CO detector for a good 10 mins with the boiler running and got a reading no higher than 1 (he said we could have anything up to 8 before it was dangerous).
He is Corgi registered and said in his opinion the boiler is perfectly safe and has left it connected and running (Hurrah).
I am now paranoid about the boiler and wonder if I should be getting a new one, or just be warm and happy?!
