Hi Mike, Really useful website you have. I have recently moved into a property that has a Powermax 140 installed it's 9 years old. I like the idea of how it works but recently when the boiler is running when I run a shower or bath I check the boiler and the pressure has dropped to zero and the red lockout light is on. turning the boiler off and re-pressuring the system it works OK. This started to happen a few weeks ago and now almost after every shower.
You mention the AAV may be blocked it that the valve that has the plastic screw poking out the top of the casing? Also to check the PRV can you give me any ideas of the possible cause and where to find the valves on the boiler?
Many thanks
Cliff

Just a quick update to the problem I have with my powermax 140... Last night I tapped yes tapped the AAV and it started to hiss " mad panic I thought" grabbed a few towels etc. But the hiss stopped no water was expelled phew.:-) The boiler is now working fine. I might replace the AAV so if anyone knows the part number and the best place to buy one that would be great!

Cliff,
Sounds to me as though the blocked AAV was all that was wrong! Any generic AAV from a plumbers' merchant will do. Take the old one with you to match the thread size. You'll have to drain some water out and take the pressure back down to zero before you can remove the old AAV.
(The PRV is on the left hand side of the brass chamber the AAV fits into, by the way)

Hi Mike, Many thanks for the info I have now replaced the AAV and the PRV with genuine Powermax parts. The AAV works as I can hear it hissing away as the heat store fills up. I have now pressurised the system several times to 1.5 bar. However it starts to drop immediately back down to zero within say 5 mins. I did set the pressure above 3 bar and I know the PRV is working as the water vents down the waste via the 15 mm pipe at the side of the PRV.
Haven't a clue where the water is going when the pressure drops to zero but hope the neighbours can swim! Any ideas maybe the pressure in the header tank needs checking / setting to 1.0 Bar?
Many thanks Cliff

The expansion vessel should be set to 1.0 bar. The water you are adding must be escaping from somewhere! Keep adding it and you'll discover where eventually Usual culprit is the PRV. Mike

Hi Mike,
Your right... I checked again this evening after finding water stains on the ceiling under the boiler thats fitted in the airing cupboard upstairs.
The water is leaking around the seal where the PRV sits in the mini expansion chamber. I fitted a new AAV and PRV but seemed to catch the rubber seal as I pushed the PRV into the main body.
Now I'm in need of a new rubber seal for the PRV and the 2 srews that hold the PRV in place. Seems an odd set up to be able to get a water tight seal. Any ideas where I can get the rubber o ring seal and new grub screws?
Thanks for your help.

Cliff & Andy,
Boiler spares merchants such as SparesBase or Parts Center (national chains) keep reasonable stocks of Powermax parts. They can look up the 'O' ring on their compter systems if you visit, or they usually also sell boxes of a select of 'O' rings for exactly this job.
I also use Hills Rubber Company in Reading for special size 'O' rings. They seem able to get ANY size you need.
Find these firms with Google.

I have a power max 140 . Keeps going to lock out , have had engineers out twice in the last 2 weeks . They initially said it was the pcb , the flow switch and electrodes. When a different engineer came to fix it he didn’t change the electrodes as said they looked fine . My boiler worked for all of 3 days . Still have the same problem of lock out . This work cost 630 pounds !!! Any advice please ?
