Hi Mike the boilerman,
i'm trying to isolate the hot water supply so I can change our downstairs sink... Quite a simple job that I can do myself (normally!).
i was trying to avoid draining the tank of hot water and wondered if there was a quick way of isolating it while I carry out the sink switch?
I saw from an existing thread that it was recommended to just cut the supply at the mains stop cock, but see a red valve on one of the feeds into the tank. I'm not a plumber so any assistance would be appreciated.
Many thanks, Darren.

Rudie1979, you will be fine just turning off the mains water supply and running one of your hot taps until the water stops flowing (presumably you will have the mains turned off anyway if you are changing a sink). Make sure also that the boiler is turned off while you are doing the work. The hot water supply is actually mains cold water which has passed through the heat exchanger on the outside of the boiler (visible on the front right hand side when you remove the front panel of the boiler casing). The red stop tap is used to prevent hot water from the boiler circulating through the heat exchanger (this is how the hot water supply is actually heated), and does not affect the flow to the hot taps.

Hi Northpole!
That's great, thanks. I was going to close the stopcock for the cold supply and was unaware that it would be as simple as that for the hot supply. I was conscious of losing all that hot water down the drains but no difference to having a couple of deep baths I suppose! I plan on putting an isolation valve on the new hot & cold feeds to the sink to prevent wasting all that water again if I need to maintain or switch taps/washers in the future.
Will keep the boiler switched off as suggested - thanks again & Happy New Year! :-)

Northpole, for comedy value I just thought I'd let you know that all was going well... Cut both feeds, was unscrewing old sink waste & from the wall when the wife decided to use the upstairs ensuite loo and then flushed it unbeknown to me... I got a face full of water!!! Lol! Rudie p.s. Isolators on now and water & boiler back on so no harm done!
