I have a Powermax 155X, it is 9 years old and it is an excellent boiler. It is a shame that they are difficult to service/repair etc these days.
Recently I have noticed that when having a shower the water can run cold for about 30 seconds then get hot again. It has never done this before and there doesn't seem to be a pattern to when it does it. Any ideas as to what this is and how I can cure it?

Tim,
Sounds like the blender valve to me - this mixes hot and cold water to keep the temperature constant, but it can scale up and react too slowly. Any Powermax engineer should be able to source and fit a replacement.

Thanks Northpole,
The water is very hard here and everything does seem to scale up. Will it actually cause me any problems or could I just leave it?

Well, it will only get worse, so I would suggest biting the bullet and having it replaced. But there's no risk of damaging the boiler, if you can put up with the water temperature fluctuating as you describe. Incidentally, do you have a scale inhibitor fitted on the mains cold water feed? - if no, I suggest asking the engineer to fit one if he does replace the blender valve. It will reduce the risk of the scaling happening again.
