My Powermax 155 has worked flawlessly for 13 years up until last night. It fired as usual for hot water via the timer at 5.30pm. I then went to have shower later and the water ran cold after a few minutes.
On checking the boiler the programmer display was completely blank and the the power button was not lit. I replaced the fuse in the power supply with one that I checked worked then turned the power back on. It immediately blew the replacement fuse.
I'm therefore guessing that the fault is something electrical rather than gas related.
Are there any checks I can do to establish where the fault lies or is it likely that the programmer has failed completely and needs replacing?
Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance.
Steve.

Steve,
Fuse-blowing is almost always caused by a failing pump. The easiest way to trace the reason is to get a pile of fuses then fit one, disconnect something (I suggest starting with the pump at the base of the unit), then turn the unit ON and see if the new fuse blows. Keep disconnecting stuff and fitting new fuses until you find the fuse stops blowing. The culprit will be the last item you disconnected.
Hope that helps, Mike

Mike,
Thank you!
It does indeed help. I disconnected the bottom pump and the boiler fire up immediately.
Is the bottom pump for CH? If so,will the boiler run safely without it for hot water until I can pick up a replacement? It looks a tad awkward to access for exchange purposes but as it's water carrying and not gas related, I presume I can replace it myself?
Thanks again,
Steve.

Hi Mike,
Just back from B&Q and fitted new pump. All is working fine now. Just need to figure out to stop water dripping from the isolation point on the Peglar pump isolation valve. Going to leave a rag under the pump and see if it dries out once the valve is warmed up.
Given what I've read on your website and the fact that my boiler is coming up for 14 years old I'm wondering whether I should consider replacing it this summer? If so, are there any boilers you would recommend?
How about a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 38 CDi? Any ideas how much I can expect to pay for a boiler exchange?
One final question, the pipe work to my radiators behind walls and beneath floors is push fit plastic up until it exits the wall to the radiators when it changes to what I'd say is microbore. Can you powerflush a system with push pipe fittings and is there any benefit?
Thank again for your assistance.
Steve.
