Morning all,
I have two questions regarding Powermax boilers.
I have a 12 year old Powermax 155 installed in my two bedroom flat that has recently has decided to go into the dreaded lockout when started up. The system is open-vented with a small tank in the attic and a vertical flue. The boiler attempts to fire up approximately three times with a loud audible clicking before it goes into lockout. I have had an engineer in who believes it is the gas valve that needs replacing, does this sound correct? I only ask as he initially decided it was the control board then changed his mind to the gas valve for no obvious reason.
My second questio is slightly more random than 'how can i fix this'. Thanks to your excellent resources Mike I am fully convinced that fixing this boiler would be a waste of money and the best thing I could do now is replace it. Herein lies my problem. I live in a top floor flat and to get access to the roof in order to fit a new flue for a new boiler, I need to spend nearly £1000 for scaffolding (Its approximately 100ft up). I know that the Powermax flues are slightly different to a traditional flue, however, I am wondering whether the flue would be compatible with any other boilers currently out there on the market to avoid having to gain access to the roof?
Thanks in advance,
Owen

Sorry for the delay, been on holiday!
Sadly the Powermax flue is not compatible with ANY new boiler, or even with any other boiler at all, so you are stuck with the Powermax or replacing the flue as well as the boiler.
Regarding the failure to light, I suggest you ask your guessing technician to repair it on a 'no fix, no fee' basis. This will smoke him out if he really IS guessing rather than diagnosing on the basis of results of the various tests one can do to isolate the fault.
My guess is the ignition electrode has malformed and the gap opened up too wide from your description. The loud clicking is probably the spark occurring externally.
Hope that helps, Mike
