I have noticed that there are 'sooty' marks on the boiler cupboard walls around my own and my neighbour's Powermax 155x boilers (both of which have been recently serviced, and in my own case at least have had the burner gasket replaced). The most noticeable marks emanate from a cutout at the top left of the boiler casing, where the gas supply pipe enters the boiler.
Are these marks simply due to hot air rising from the burner and carrying household dust (as can also be sometimes seen on walls above radiators), or could it be due to a leakage of combustion products? I have two CO alarms near the boiler and neither have so far been triggered, BTW.

Northpole,
This is almost certainly heat staining from warm air convecting up from inside the boiler. I can't say for certain without seeing your boiler and testing the atmosphere inside the cupboard for combustion products, but I'd say it would be extremely unlikely that my gas analyser would detect any.
When did you last have it serviced and safety-checked? If it's due for one soon, mention your concern to the technician.
By the way even if there IS flue gas leaking into the cupboard, your CO monitor is unlikely to detect it. There is only a significant concentration of CO in flue gas when there is incomplete combustion caused by lack of oxygen. When a gas appliance is operating correctly, there are only a few parts per million of CO in the exhaust gas. Less than 20PPM on a Powermax, IIRC.

Mike,
Thanks, that's very reassuring. The boiler had its annual service last November (CO reading 5PPM, IIRC!), and I also had the engineer back again in January to replace the O-rings on the heat exchanger which were leaking; so it has been looked at twice recently. I use a chap based in Hemel Hempstead who, like yourself, specialises in Powermax boilers; of which there seem to be quite a lot on various developments in this part of Herts. (if anyone would like my engineer's contact details, please PM me).
You're performing a valuable public service through the information on your website, and now this forum, for us Powermax owners - it's greatly appreciated.

You're welcome. There used to be a huge long thread on pre-loved.com that answered pretty much every Powermax problem under the sun, but Pre-loved deleted all the discussion threads when 'tidying up' their site so all that knowledge was lost... So I've had it in mind to do a new forum for a while now, and here it is!

Mike,
Yes, I've come across those Pre-loved posts before myself, and very helpful some of them were. Pity that they've now gone - I didn't realise.
