Hello,
Can anyone advise pls? - I have a 12 year old Powermax 155x. Been working fault free for last few years but has recently been cutting out and then restarting an hour or so later.
It goes like this... With the HW and CH both set on 24hr mode the boiler fires up (green light on) and we have heating and hot water working fine. Then the boiler will suddenly stop (green light goes off but NO lock out red light). Nothing will happen for maybe an hour and then it will fire up again (Green light on, CH pump running etc). It will last anywhere between another 5 mins or maybe several hours before stopping again. The cycle then repeats.
Grateful for any suggestions!
Many thanks and Happy New Year

jagpaw,
Are you sure you actually have a fault? The boiler basically tries to keep the contents of its internal tank at around 80 degrees C; once this is reached it will stop the burner until either your central heating or use of hot water lowers the temperature below this value, when the burner (green light) starts up again. Unlike a combi boiler, the burner does not automatically start as soon as you run hot water or whenever the central heating is running. Is the central heating pump still running even when the burner has stopped? - this is not necessarily a fault, and can happen if the air temperature is quite cold, requiring the heating to operate for a long period.

Hi Northpole, thanks for prompt response. You got me wondering there, especially as today it's been working OK! But yes I'm sure there's a fault there - reason being is that the boiler sometimes switches itself off before the CH and HW are up to temperature - the radiators are only luke warm as is the hot water. (The CH wall thermostat is set to high, so this isn't a factor). Also, when it fires up again it may only fire for 1-2mins before switching off - I've never witnessed this operation before. You've got me thinking though that perhaps the HW thermostat or temperature probe could be faulty? Understand your point ref the CH pump running without necessarily the boiler firing.

jagpaw,
Yes, I agree that doesn't sound right - certainly worth having an engineer check and if necessary replace the thermostats as you suggest. If you feel competent to change them yourself, replacements can be sourced fairly easily online.

Yes going to look into sourcing the part and doing it myself. Many thanks for your help. Will post an update to the forum in due course.

Hi all
Where can I find the hot water pump. Are there any diagrams? I have hot water but no heating. Thermostat won't make the click noise either. Having done reading it seems to be pump or control panel problem... I want to check the pump before getting repair to the control panel.
Thank you

Hi Jonny C,
Afraid I can't tell you where the hot water pump is (though pretty sure someone else on the forum can!). But just to update on the original issue I posted here - i fixed it by replacing the programmer unit. It started to make a buzzing noise whenever the CH was on. This noise get louder and louder and eventually the CH stopped working (buzzing stopped too). Not sure if this helps any..

Jonny C,
The central heating pump (which I assume is what you mean) is the one at the top left of the boiler looking from the front; the other pump on the lower right circulates water through the heat exchanger when the burner is operating or you run hot water from the taps.
