I have a problem with the hot water -- when the shower or hot taps are turned on the water starts off hot but once the cold water is turned on to adjust the temperature, it progressively runs colder until there is no hot water left. I had the same problem 2 years ago and a new mixer valve on the boiler solved the problem. However, this time I have been told by a Potterton engineer that the valve is working ok and the problem is scaling in the heat exchanger and I need a new boiler. I don't want to commit to this until I am sure that this is really the problem. Everybody wants to sell you a new boiler these days! I say this because the problem started suddenly and I don't believe scaling could happen that quickly The boiler is about 10 years old. Any ideas?

Richard,
This doesn't quite sound like scale to me. With scale, the hot runs hot to start with, then cools regardless, whether you turn the cold ON or not. Can you try this and report back? A bath hot tap is the fiercest, most revealing to use for this test.

Hello Mike....Im Mark, have been plumbing and sorting boilers for 25 years plus.....always learn a lot from someone who has been there before. So my problem?? Powermax 185....not firing up...no lockout? fan runs and I am getting live to earth from all three terminals on the pressure switch. Gas is coming through for igniting but no ignition. Phoned potterton technical and they said it has to be the board....This has left me still wondering why is it not the pressure switch. You seem to undedrstand the depths of this beast would appreciate a reply. Regards Mark

Mark,
If gas is arriving but not lighting, then there must be no spark, or no spark in the right place! A common problem on the 185, it is usually a distorted or short-circuiting ignition electrode. Have you tried replacing it? May as well replace it as to even inspect it, you need to remove the burner head and fit a new gasket.
I have also found this fault caused by a faulty ignition lead, sparking to earth straight through the insulation! If a new electrode and lead make no difference, then yes I'd be replacing the board next.
It can't be the APS as you say the gas valve is opening.
